To Rub or Not to Rub, That Is The Question

First, as much as I'd like to, I cannot take credit for the title or idea for this post.  My sweet and beautiful friend, Amy H. had this very creative suggestion and I just couldn't pass it up.

This stemmed from a question she asked, so here is my attempt to address said question.

QUESTION:  Do you mind when someone rubs your pregnant belly?  Does it bother you, or not?

ANSWER:  I actually don't mind.  However, the first time someone did it, I wasn't that far along and without thinking, I moved her hand away.  I don't think she realized it, but I did and I was kind of embarrassed.  But now, now that my belly is OBVIOUSLY there and you can't help but notice it, I don't mind it at all.  I kind of think of it as people sharing their love and positive energy and thoughts with the babies.  I've waited so long to have a baby belly, I welcome all loving pats and rubs!

So, how about you?  I'd love to know how you feel about this same subject.  I have friends who don't like it at all, and others who don't mind at all.  What's your opinion?

  1. I love pregnant bellies. I have patted a momma's belly that wasn't related to me, but the girls, I spoke to those babies everytime I saw them! I told them my name and that I loved them. I never had anyone talk to mine or pat on it so I don't know how it would feel. But I love to tell the babies hi.

I need to see you!!!! I need to tell your babies hi. :))

  2. It kind of weirds me out when someone touches my belly. Maybe because I still have the "Am I fat" or "Oh Yeah I'm Pregnant feeling".

  3. I don't mind it...NORMALLY. With Natalie..I was in school teaching to the BITTER overdue end :). One of my students (GREAT KID) was autistic and "hand" (his right hand) kind of had a mind of its own and lived in a video game world...mainly war video games. anyway..."hand" sensed that something was wrong with the baby and NEEDED to feel the belly. I let him do it (because...I had been letting kiddos feel my tummy all the time)...and it became a strange habit of his. Sometimes "hand" wasn't sensing the heartbeat and needed reassurance. Needless to say I became uncomfortabe with it. What I soon found out was that his Mom was pregnant too...and he took comfort in touching her belly. Chase and I were a strange duo those last few months...oddly I felt relieved when "hand" realized there WAS a heartbeat (everyday). :)

    So...I don't mind...in MOST cases :)

  4. Hmmm, I didn't mind if it was somebody I knew, and in South Texas as you know touching (babies, bellies) is somewhat of a supersticion (sp?) and if they don't the baby will get sick...you've bound to have heard that in your Uvalde days. I guess I understand that part too, but it kinda creeped me out a little if I didn't know them. Glad you are embracing the love!

  5. I don't mind the IDEA of someone touching my pregnant belly. But I have to admit it was weird at first - took me by surprise. Throughout the pregnancies I would get used to it. But here in Texas, random strangers just come right up to you and rub your belly without asking and without warning. It's weird! I don't think it's any more weird than someone stranger touching my hand, though. I guess being raised in the Midwest, touching strangers in general just isn't something my body is used to. ;)

  6. I don't really mind if it is someone I know. Now, if a stranger starts rubbin my baby bump that crosses the line. A couple of times when I was pregnant with the girls older men at church would give me a rub or a pat. It didn't really bother me, but it was a little awkward. I agree, though. Anytime anyone rubs my belly I know they are just sharing in my excitement over the precious miracle!
