sad day today

This morning I got a page from the office saying I had a phone call. I thought this was odd, and when I got there, Rich was on the phone...he could barely talk. He said, "Get a sub, and go to the junior high and get my mom." So, I calmly asked him what was going on, and he managed to get out, "Grandaddy passed away this morning."

Richard's precious, God-fearing, loving grandfather passed away in his sleep early this morning. He was 84 years old, but we weren't expecting this at all. Richard's grandmother's sister just passed away last Tuesday and we were all in Amarillo for the funeral this weekend. Grandaddy was doing great, it seemed. He had had some trouble with his heart the past few years, but Richard's mom saw them yesterday and she said he was spry and walking without his cane even.

So, this news has been shocking and really hard because we all just spent the weekend with him and he was perfectly fine. We think his little heart just gave out finally.

The whole family is grieving, but most especially Richard's mother and grandmother. They had been married 65 years!!! WOW! I was hugging on her neck this afternoon and she whispered, "I just don't know what I'm going to do now, Charla...what do I do now, without him?" It broke my heart.

Richard's mom has a sister, but she lives further away and Richard's mom has been taking care of his grandparents...checking up on them and such, for the last few years...they live just 30 miles north of us.

Anyway, please say a prayer for our family and especially for Rich's nanny as we bury the man she has loved all these years.

I hope that God will strengthen each of you so that you can offer His comfort to the people around you that need it the most. I hope that you guys also get to spend some time remembering all of the good times with Granddaddy.

  5. Charla and Richard,
I'm so sorry to hear about Richard's Granddaddy. Trent was very close to his Grandad and loosing him was much like loosing his Dad. I know there is an emptiness right now of the physical body but Richard will recall with his family so many things that the heart will fill again with special memories. We love you all and will be including you in our prayers. Love, dp
