Favorite Movies

To me, "favorite movies" are those I will watch over and over again for no particular reason, other than I just love them that much! I didn't list any movie that I really liked or loved but wouldn't necessarily watch over and over again. And, I tried my best, but I absolutely could not narrow down just 10. So, here we go, in no particular order except for number 1 (the last in the list).

Top Gun
I fell in love with this movie obviously before Tom Cruise went cuckoo for cocoa puffs. I mean, how can you not LOVE Anthony Edwards and Tom Cruise playing beach volleyball with "Playing with the Boys" in the background? C'mon!

The Quiet Man
This is my favorite John Wayne movie. He stars with Maureen O'Hara, one of my favorite actresses ever. Basically, his family is originally from Ireland and he returns to escape a seedy past in America. The rest of the movie is about what happens when he returns to Ireland. If you haven't seen it, go rent it right now or borrow my copy! It is clean, and just a great story!

Corrina, Corrina
This movie is moving, to say the least. I think it's appeal lies in the fact that it reiterates the racial barriers of the 1950's. In the midst of this closed-minded turmoil, a white family is helped physically and emotionally by a black maid. Oh, I cry every time I see this movie and fall in love again and again with it!

You've Got Mail

I absolutely love Meg Ryan as an actress. I have always loved her movies (When Harry Met Sally, Sleepless in Seattle), but this one I absolutely fell in love with. It has always been my dream to own a bookstore someday, so the idea of "The Shop Around the Corner" just made me giddy! I just love the storyline and because I'm an avid reader, the movie itself just kept me captivated. It doesn't hurt that the running love story was via email, either!

Singing in the Rain

I have always loved musicals and love stage plays. This is one of my favorite musicals. I think I love it first because it stars Debbie Reynolds and Gene Kelly who are amazing singers and dancers. I also love the history of the movie world it incorporates.

Ferris Bueller's Day Off
I first saw this movie on t.v., the edited version, and I'm not sure what drew me in, but I have loved it ever since! I wore our VHS copy out and now have the DVD and watch it every once in a while. It makes me laugh and I watch it over and over again...yes, I can quote it word for word if you are interested! ;)

Napoleon Dyn
amite
I know there are people who think this movie is absolutely dumb! I agree. BUT, it is also absolutely hilarious and when I saw it, I knew I had to own it! How many times have I watched Uncle Rico chunk a steak and hit Napoleon in the head while he's riding his bike? I mean, that is classic, dry, dumb humor and I love it!

Open Range

I love cowboy/western movies. This is an amazing, modern western with Kevin Costner and one of my favorite actors, Robert Duvall. I think he is one of the best actors of our time.

The Parent Trap
(the original)
I had to add "the original" because I think the remake of this classic Disney standard just doesn't do the original justice. This is a movie I probably watched twice a week/weekend when I was growing up, I loved it that much! It is also a movie that will never get old and I will one day be able to watch with my children. Not to mention, it's another starring Maureen O'Hara.

The Swiss Family Robinson

How many of us dreamed of building a house in the trees and fighting off pirates with coconut bombs after we saw this movie? How can you not be totally enthralled with it? I still watch it all of the time. Another one I had to replace VHS for DVD.

White Christmas
Oh, how I love this movie. It is not only a classic, but a tradition in my house at Christmas. I just had to buy it on DVD so that when I'm not "home" for the holidays, I can make it feel like I am. Bing Crosby and Danny Kay are spectacular in this movie, between dancing and singing. And, growing up in South Texas, a White Christmas usually WAS a dream!

Indiana Jones series (especially The Last Crusade)

My family spent many a Sunday night watching a good movie on television. After a day filled with Sunday school, church, family lunches, and weekend homework, it was time to find a place on the couch and curl up for a good movie before bedtime. Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade was always a family favorite. I must admit I did not really like the newest Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. What a disappointment. But I will always love the first three.

Shag, the Movie

I first saw this movie in college. My roommate had it and as soon as I saw it, I loved it! I will watch it over and over again. I even played it during Disciple Now weekend with the high school girls and they LOVED it! It is based in the 1950's and is about a group of Southern girls, who just after graduating from high school, spend their last summer together in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.

Star Wars series

Need I say more? Family favorite; always will be.

The Shawshank Re
demption
What a powerful movie, huh? This film has so many depths to it, and I think that is what is alluring about it.

Dirty Dancing

Oh, who doesn't love this movie? The dream of a man sweeping you off your feet lifting you above his head while the spotlight is on you and "I've Had the Time of my Life" playing in the background is just too much for one girl! Not to mention the good girl loving the bad boy. Ah, it will always be one of my very favorites!

And my NUMBER ONE FAVORITE MOVIE OF ALL TIME...
The Sound of Music
I can't even describe to you my love for this movie. It honestly brings me to tears. And I don't know why. First, I love the music. My family is very musical and there was always music in our home and at family gatherings growing up. Most of the time it involved my father and uncle on the guitar with the rest of us singing. Something about this movie, always made me feel like I was surrounded by family. At our wedding, there was no "here comes the bride"; I used the processional from Maria and Captain von Trapp's wedding (minus the part where they start to sing, "how do you solve a problem like Maria). I have seen it on stage, but it just isn't the same as the movie. I did get to see it on the big screen and it was amazing!

  1. I'm surprised at the number of "oldies" on your list. Here is my #1-Scent of a Woman, #2-Agnes of God,#3-Green Mile, #4-Summer Place, #5-Ghost, #6- Three Faces of Eve, #7-One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, #8 Delores Claiborne, #9 The Bone Collector, #10 The Notebook. 2. I will admit, I am NOT mush of a movie watcher. Truth be known, I just cannot sit in one place for that long! It makes me crazy! (The last movie I saw in at the theater was Cars!) However, there is only one movie that I will sit through and watch without moving...The Sound of Music! It is the ONLY movie I own!

You have incredible movie taste! :)
